5 Steps in Supporting Your Family’s Immunity

5 Steps in Supporting Your Family’s Immunity

It’s inevitable that we will all get the common cold from time to time. And within a family it only takes one of us to catch something before it's shared amongst the whole household. However there are simple lifestyle choices that we can incorporate into our day to day that will support our immune systems when the threat of colds or viruses sneak up on us unexpectedly. Stronger immunity leads to shorter illnesses with less severe symptoms.

Although there are many things that you can do to support your immunity and a vast array of different products on the market that will help you, we are strong believers that simple everyday common sense practices will help you to keep well. Here are our five foundational steps in supporting your everyday health and immunity.

Eat Whole Foods

Eating whole foods makes sense and probably fits with every health food message that you’ve read in relation to looking after yourself.

Eat a variety of foods including loads of fruit and vegetables, which are nature's immunity heroes! Fruits and veggies are high in nutrients like Vitamin C helps to build a strong white blood cell count, which are essential in supporting our bodies in fighting off lurking nasties.

Zinc is a mineral abundant in meats such as seafood, poultry, beef and lamb works with a protein in meat to help to strengthen the immune system. Certain types of cells need protein to function properly. Therefore, including products that are rich in zinc are essential for keeping your strength and energy up and keeping well.

Buy Organic

If you’ve been here for a while, you’ll know that “Organic” is one of our key values (hence the name). Sunshine Coast Organic Meats only source food or products from farming methods that refrain from the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides or other artificial chemicals. We specialise in high-quality meats that are antibiotic and hormone free, wholesome and sourced from local, ethical farmers.

By strengthening the immune system in the body, it eliminates the infections of viruses. In eating organic, we are reducing the risk of exposure of harsh, unnecessary chemicals to our bodies. This in turn allows our immune system to work efficiently. When you start consuming organic food, your body’s ability to fight diseases increases.

Quality Bone Broth

Of course we have to add in bone broth here! It’s LOADED with vitamins and minerals that support boosting immunity. Ever heard your grandmother say that when you’re sick you need to have some chicken soup? Well there's a very good reason for this. There are many modern medicine links that show us that the immune system lives in the gut and researchers are busy continuing to look into the vast connections that lie here.

Overtime, with poor diet and lifestyle choices, our gut lining can become damaged. This can lead to our immune system becoming overactive and weakened. Bone Broth is easily absorbed by the body and can help to rebuild the gut lining.

Amino acids boost our immunity and reduce inflammation. Our bodies can make some amino acids, however, there are others that we need to get from foods. When we are sick our bodies are working hard to make amino acids and it's essential that we draw those from foods to help us to heal and recover. Broth is FULL of amino acids making it anti-inflammatory and a superhero in boosting immunity.

You can make your own, quite simply at home in a pressure cooker, in your slow cooker or even just on your stovetop. But if you are purchasing one, make sure that you know that it's been made with quality, organic ingredients. We sell a great quality bone broth that we make in store.

Live Well

It's common sense, but exercising, hydrating, getting Vitamin D out in nature, taking part in stress free activities and practicing good hygiene are all good practices for keeping well and immunity in check.

It’s well known that people who are active are less likely to suffer from winter flus and viruses. Simple and enjoyable movement can help to keep you well and happy.  Getting some sun on our skin produces Vitamin D. This has the ability to influence our immune responses and a lack thereof can make us more susceptible to the common cold or worse, the flu and viruses.

Prolonged stress makes us vulnerable to illness. Minimise stress where possible. Do more of the things that make you happy and find opportunities to unwind with your family. Go for a walk, watch a funny movie, cook a meal together - there is gold in the simple things.

Sleep Well

Our body benefits from quality rest and sleep. To re-energise your immune system, it’s essential that you get your full 8 hours in! Being run down leaves you more open to illness. Don’t leave it until you are well and truly out of action before you make this a priority. Get your Z’s in consistently to support your immunity and overall health. Sometimes a simple bedtime routine can help.
