Rising cost of products
When you buy meat for your family dinner, it is easy to focus on what you see at the checkout line, and that little number may drive you to the supermarket rather than a local butcher shop. The difference, however, isn't just the quality of meat, it's where those extra cents go.
At Sunshine Coast Organic Meats, we do things differently than the major supermarket giants. Rather than squeezing producers to hit higher and higher profit targets, we let our farmers dictate their prices to us.
The $1 price rise at the supermarket.
Why is supermarket meat more expensive?
Recent reports and Senate inquiries into Australian supermarket practices have revealed something we've always kind of assumed: Australia's two major supermarkets have an incredible amount of market power and use it to dictate, manipulate and trap producers.
When farm overheads like diesel, electricity, fertiliser, and freight/shipping skyrocket, big supermarket chains often refuse to adjust the amount THEY are willing to pay for products. Because these major producers rely on supermarkets to buy their products, they are strong armed into accepting wholesale purchase prices that do not reflect the true cost of their product. Farmers are then left to absorb those rising costs alone. And in the instance where these supermarkets are willing to adjust their purchase price, it is barely enough to cover the vital costs of running a farm, and the cost is passed onto consumers indiscriminately. Even if the supermarkets are not willing to pay the increase of production costs, they can see the global food trends of increasing prices and mark up their product accordingly — even if they have not paid more for the product.
The result of these practices is multi-layered: not only does this practice reduce the quality of supermarket products, but decreases the ability for smaller, family farms to be on supermarket shelves and be accessible for conscious consumers. Senate inquiry findings highlight that without fair pricing structures, family-owned operations are rapidly disappearing across Australia, replaced by massive corporate farming conglomerates, which produce a huge amount of low-quality product to meet the demand of the market in a cost-effective way. When prices are squeezed below the true cost of production, farming ceases to be sustainable for everyday families.
How is Sunshine Coast Organic Meats different?
We don’t view our producers as suppliers to negotiate down—we view them as essential partners. When power bills surge or diesel prices climb, our farmers set a price that covers their real-world cost of living and production. This ensures they can keep farming sustainably without taking a loss just to stay on the shelves. We accept and acknowledge the reason for these price increases and do our best to absorb them and reduce the impact on our consumers.
The values that align between us and our producers include fairness, transparency and accessibility. This is why we trust that our producers don't use pricing power to gouge or set excessive rates; they adjust prices fairly to reflect actual operational costs. It is a relationship built on mutual trust and transparent economics. We choose to partner with independent, family-run operations—the mum-and-dad farmers who have spent generations caring for their land and livestock.
When you purchase from Sunshine Coast Organic Meats, your dollar goes directly toward:
